RSD #1,819 & 1,820 Routines and Having the Daily Run

There is something to be said for the unexpected and routine. I settled back in to my house and my routine and it feels so good. As I prep for the half marathon this weekend I reflect on my journey and how much I have overcome in this last year.

Having the daily run has kept me centered and focused.

Having the daily run has kept me grounded and in the here and now.

Having the daily run has given me time to reflect and grieve.

Having my daily run has given me time to plan and dream.

It is not an easy path but it is worth it and I trust God that all will work out as intended.

RSD #1,817 & 1,818 Weekend runs

Yesterday was a four mile run and today was 9.25 so between the two days I ran a half marathon. I was worried about today as my body just seems tired. I felt really good and strong most of the way. About the eight mile mark I started to fade a little.

My nutrition the night before and the morning of were not good and I know that will make a difference going into the half next weekend. I didn’t have a good meal the night before and didn’t have anything for a smoothie before the long run this morning which are how I typically prep and now I know it makes a difference.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day and a day off to remember all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom and way of life. I am grateful for so many things and running is one of them. I have said it before and I will say it again, I do not take this for granted and enjoy every mile.

RSD #1,810 – 1,816 I Feel Like I am Back to Civilization

I took care of my mother’s dog while she was out of town and had no internet or cell phone reception so am having to play catch up. She has a little winter home in a retirement community in Casa Grande, AZ and I stayed there with her dog, Mia. I am now old enough to legally live there yet really don’t feel like I belong in a retirement community!

Last weekend I drove out and did a long trail run north of town to prep for the half marathon next week. Still very slow so am not going to stress over trying to hit a new PR this race. Just planning to enjoy the other runners, the music, the weather, and the experience.

Most of the other days I ran early near the community. The mornings are starting to warm up slightly into the 70’s. Luckily some of the paths were shady and it felt great!

I did give up drinking until race day so hoping to feel a difference soon. It is always good to give it up for a bit just to make sure it is not an addiction and that I am in control.

RSD #1,808 & 1,809 Slow Role Friday

Enjoyed a nice slow run on an overcast morning. Beautiful time to be outside and felt really good despite the slow pace. I am planning a long run on Sunday and if I could order the same weather as today I would like to do so now.

I am listening to Blue Ocean Strategy while running and this one is a little hard to stay focused on. My mind wandered today so I will probably need to listen to this one again. It does have me thinking about the open opportunities that I see in the real estate industry. The question is how to implement a strategy to take advantage of those opportunities. I will keep listening.

RSD #1,807 Treadmill in the Storage Bay

Yes, that is where the treadmill is. We converted part of a storage bay at an industrial park to a workout gym. It is pretty cool with a wall of mirrors, free weights, and a weight rack. And it is a private gym…so there is that.

The problem in the summer time is the coolers have a hard time keeping up. Today the temperature in the gym was 90 degrees. I chose that over the nearly 100 degrees with the sun beating early this evening.

The treadmill is connected to the internet and I can get on iFit and select a recorded run. Today was in San Diego on Coronado Island and the iFit trainer was Kristy something. She is a veteran who lost a leg, among other injuries, in a downed helicopter in Iraq. Her story is super inspiring and watching and listening made the miles go by quickly. She is an inspiration.

Getting to “run” in different locations is the fun part of a treadmill run that is through iFit. The iFit runners all have stories about their journeys and about the different cities that the runs are filmed in. It is a great way to mix up the run streak and get inspired.

RSD #1,806 The drinking and the struggle

Yes, I had a few drinks last night and yes, the run was slow today!! Haha, just ironic that I wrote about it yesterday then really felt it today.

The trails runs are coming to a quick end as my house/pet sitting duties end tomorrow. The morning run was fabulous with some dark clouds to the west and the scent of rain in the air. Didn’t get rained on…unfortunately!

Definitely counting down to another dry season before the half marathon on June 4th. I will keep you posted.

RSD #1,804 & 1,805 How long before a race to stop drinking??

Earlier this year I did a dry January to prepare for the half marathon runs in January and February. I believe it did make a difference in my overall fitness and ability to hit my PR goal in February.

My pace is so far off of the January pace that I am not even thinking about a PR in San Diego in a few weeks. I would like to finish strong which means prepping and giving my body what it needs to feel good about finishing the race.

The San Diego race is three weeks out so probably time to start slowing the alcohol consumption. Then no alcohol for the two weeks leading up to the race.

The hotter weather is another reason to eliminate the alcohol. The morning temps are in the upper 70’s now and will continue to rise. Better hydration is a must as I set out on longer runs over the next few weeks.

I know other runners who give up everything except beer in their training routine. And still others who continue to enjoy their favorite beverage regardless of the training and race schedule.

I am curious what works for other runners. If your are reading this, what are your thoughts? Does alcohol consumption affect your running performance?

RSD #1,801 – 1,803 The Gift of Running

The gift continues on with three more days of trail runs done. I am feeling stronger and the temps are starting to rise. Training from here out will be harder and hot. I will need to get out earlier and hydrate better.

I haven’t ever used salt tabs much due to the short distances and am thinking I might add a few on some longer training runs in the next few weeks.

This is part of the gift of running. It is trying new diet, supplament, and training regiments that work for you. We are all created uniquely beautiful and what works for one person may not work for another.

The gift of running has taught me so many valuable lessons over the years. I have learned so much about myself and gained greater appreciation for my health, my life, and the love of the people around me.

RSD #1,800!!!! Another 100 milestone

Wednesday, May 10, 2023 in Casa Grande, AZ where I ran my 1800th day in a row of 3 miles or more.

And now I am closing in on the 5 year mark. What an incredible journey. When you hear the saying, “life can take you to unexpected places,” don’t ever underestimate the places you can go!! If you had told me 10 years ago that I would have a run streak of even a mile a day for almost five years I would have told you that you are crazy!

Some may view this healthy addiction as crazy! It might be…and it is my kind of crazy! The running community is so friendly, kind, and caring. I get to travel to run and am excited about races coming up in the future. I get to see new places and meet new people that I would never have met before. This is a gift I give to myself.

RSD #1,799 The Beauty of the Morning Run

It is tranquil out here in the high desert. Heading out in the morning for a peaceful run on the dirt trails is a great way to start the day. No people or cars, just a few lizards, ground squirls, and snake trails to keep me on my toes. No snakes in my path yet which is preferred!

Today my average pace was 10:06 min/mi which is way off of any type of PR pace for the race in four weeks. I will focus on hydration and rest in order to build the pace and mileage over the coming weeks.
