I was on vacation in Oceanside, CA for run day 3,000. I planned it that way. I wanted to celebrate this milestone with a run on the beach with my boys. We rented a condo right on the water in Oceanside and enjoyed great laughs, good food, fun games, and of course awesome runs on the beach.
I had intended to post, and yet, while there I didn’t want to get out my laptop. I knew if I opened my laptop the distractions would set in. I would open my email, check the broker files (work), and generally be distracted from the people I love most in the world and who I want to spend time with. I soaked up every minute of the time with them. I know as they start their own families it will be harder and harder for all of us to be together.
So the post is late. It doesn’t diminish the milestone. The meaning of 3,000 is significant to me in a way I am having trouble articulating. The first 1,000, or earning my comma as they say in the run streak world, seemed like such a huge achievement. Now, to have done it three times, well it is, I don’t know, surreal and doesn’t feel real.
I am learning that when you do something every day it becomes a routine. Now the routine is solidly set and therefore it has become ordinary. It is just what I do. But how can running three miles every day be ordinary. It sounds like I am taking it for granted and I assure you I do not. I am incredibly grateful that I can, and do, run every day.
I guess what I am saying is, I doesn’t feel special to me. It feels normal and just part of who I am and what I do. I enjoy it most days. I feel good and want to keep running as long as I can, because that is what I do.
