RSD #1,540 Relax to go faster

That was the message on the Darren Daily this morning. I subscribe to and listen most days to Darren Hardy and his Darren Daily message. It is an excellent way to start the day with some wisdom, inspiration, and a positive message.

Today his message was around the concept of relax to go faster. He was given these instructions during a race car driving experience in Italy. It was also the secret to a sprinter who’s name I can’t remember now.

From my experience running I can tell you there are times when I tighten up in the shoulders and even my faces clinches up sometimes. When I tell myself to relax and settle in to my rhythm it just feels better and I do go faster.

This can be true in our personal and professional lives too. Do you feel yourself tense up at work or at home when a particular topic is brought up or a particular person is speaking? Is it better to relax and let that topic or person not carry so much weight?

Then Darren ended with run happy! Which, of course, I loved!

So relax and run happy today!

RSD #1,537, #1,538, and #1,539 Slacker!

That’s me!

Today is Monday, August 22nd and I took a break from my computer over the weekend. The weather was cooler with lots of thunderstorms over the last few days. Didn’t get rained on during my runs which was a little disappointing.

Found a slightly better route at the new house that extends the run to about 3.25 miles daily. Less street sidewalk with cars and a little nicer trail.

RSD #1,534 & #1,535 The Crossing Guard

Really thought I posted yesterday. It’s been a long week and it is only Thursday. Still working then coming home and unpacking boxes and putting things away.

Today I witnessed a car almost take out the school crossing guard as he was moving the 15 mile an hour sign into the road. The crossing guard was frozen and didn’t move for about 10 seconds after the car passed. He looked at me and said, “That guy almost hit me…he didn’t slow down!” I acknowledged that I saw the whole thing and told him I was glad he was okay.

Makes me grateful there are crossing guards for our kids because some people just don’t pay attention. Good people who just get distracted. I don’t think the driver was malicious or intended to scare the crossing guard and certainly didn’t want to hurt him. He must have been in a hurry to get to work. That is the most generous explanation I can give for his behavior.

So the lesson for me today was to slow down, pay attention, and enjoy the journey!

RSD #1,533 The Extra Mile…Fred Factor

Just finished listening to the Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn today and then came upon this quote on Facebook today:

Running Truth: The extra mile is always much easier than the first mile.

Isn’t that true with so many things. Isn’t it easier to be a Fred and go the extra mile at work, at home, or with friends? The Fred Factor is a book about the extraordinary service from a postal carrier named Fred. His extra consideration and dedication to the people he served sparked a conversation (and book) about turning the ordinary into extraordinary.

It is a quick listen or read and worth the time. The world will be a better place if we had more Fred’s….and more runners…just saying!

RSD #1,532 Last run at Bronco Ln

Today was my last day at the Bronco Lane house and therefore my running route when visiting there. It was a horseshoe shaped route with some small hills, lots of trees, and wide sidewalks.

There were usually people out walking their dogs, biking, or just out strolling and it didn’t matter what time of the day. It was a friendly and familiar place that I will have fond memories of.

RSD #1,531 Watson Lake in Prescott

A beautiful morning on the Watson Lake trail in Prescott, Arizona. The trail around the lake is supposed to be five miles. The last time I tried to hike the trail we actually got sidetracked onto a different trail and did a 12 mile hike.

I was determined to follow the trail this time, however, up in the rocks I somehow took a wrong turn and doubled back. So I circled around the boulders and returned the way I came for a total of 5.5 miles that took me around an hour and twenty minutes.

The weather was perfect in the upper sixties and the creeks were all flowing which was fun to see and hear. There were a few muddy spots but nothing I could work around. I snapped a few pictures and will try to load them.

RSD #1,529 Day after & #1,530 Float spa

I opted to run in the evening on the treadmill the day after the surgery to allow over 24 hours from the time of the surgery. I ran slow and kept my heart rate under 130. Got the three miles in and all went well. No bleeding or concerns.

Today it was an early morning run as still a fairly slow pace of around a 10 minute mile. Again no bleeding from the stitches and all seems to be healing well.

After the run I drove up north to meet my youngest son as we continue to clean out the house and complete last minute cleaning before handing over keys. We took a little break from our work and went to a float spa. It was my first time and it was pretty amazing. So relaxing and tranquil I highly recommend it and will definitely do it again.

RSD #1,528 Surgery day

Posting a day late…

Got up early and had a good out and back run today at the new place. Enjoying finding new routes and observing the surroundings.

Then prepared for the surgery to remove the cancer on my lip. SO happy they were able to keep the amount of skin the had to remove to a minimum and verified the margins were clean and they got it all. The plastic surgeon then sewed it up along my lip line. This was the best possible outcome and hopefully there will be minimal scarring.

RSD #1,527 New routines

Getting settled into the new house. Found a new path and ran out and back today. I love starting my day with a run. It feels like a win for my physical and mental health. My mind is alert and I am full of hope for the day.

Finding new routines and a new path for running is also necessary in my life right now as I navigate change. It is a strong metaphor for how I am feeling about the direction of my life. How do I move forward and create lasting positive change? What is the right path? What new habits do I need to form?

These are the questions I think about on my daily run.
